Meanwhile, my neighbour Claudette is insisting that we have a little party in the village on publication day. It’s no good me telling her that I hate to be the centre of attention.
“Oui, you must do this.” She said firmly “We, your friends, we want to share in this moment with you. Friendship is a great gift not to be taken lightly – and besides it’s a good excuse to eat cake.”
Well, I can’t argue with that! And, since Claudette is very much in the book with her wise words, alongside Bread Man, Mr and Mrs Pepperpot, Constance who taught me to cook, and Thierry (the one who crashed his tractor into our woodshed recently), and Jean-Claude who is always full of good ideas (including the now annual snail race in the village which you’ll read about in the book), and many more of my lovely neighbours who made this story possible – well, you guessed. I gave in. We are having a party – in our garage. With cake.
We built the garage during periods of lockdown and restrictions over the last couple of years. It’s tacked onto the back of a small narrow room we use as a workshop in the house. It was the former village telephone exchange, and the téléphone sign is still there. As we toiled on the garage, we became a source of entertainment for the villagers and several openly hinted that it would make a great party space! What can I say? I aim to please!
